"That's not our demographic.": If A Tree Falls in the Forest...

extrawiggleroom: I’ve owed everyone THE blog post about my trip to American Apparel for quite awhile now. Honestly, I haven’t been entirely sure what to say. The trip was incredible, with or without the tour. I got to see a ton of interesting people- models, designers, old friends- and do a lot of fun things…. Can’t believe I didn’t see this til now. @NancyUpton, the chick who won American Apparel’s “The Next Big Thing” plus-size-model search with her clever sendup of its unfortunate language - and got a fucked-up initial response from the company - got invited to check out AA’s factory and offices. Looks like they still didn’t ultimately manage the way they should have. If you’re familiar with the story or interested in the fashion industry or body-image messages in the media, it’s a good read on how even a well-intentioned company can fail to see the forest for all those plus-sized trees in the way.
